choosing your dress
Surveys show brides spend more time on choosing their wedding gown than on
any other part of their wedding (except, perhaps, in choosing their husband!) Finding
the right dress is a very personal journey and no amount of magazine articles can
do the job for you. However, there are some tips and tricks that should help make
the process a little easier – and a lot more fun!
-
Try on lots of dresses. Most brides will try 16 or 17 dresses before finding the one. It’s also often surprising how the dress that never looked like it would suit you turns out to be the one.
-
Think timeless elegance. This is not the time to go with some fashion fad that will look dated next month, never mind in 20 years’ time. Ask yourself how you will feel showing your grandchildren pictures of yourself wearing your dress!
-
Take a digital camera with you on all your shopping trips. Each time you try on a gown get a friend to grab a snap. That way you can remind yourself of what looked good and what was not quite right.
-
Cut out pictures from fashion and bridal mags that you like. It’s easier to show shop assistants what you like rather than to tell them.
-
Choose one good friend – or maybe even your mum – to come along with you and give you an honest appraisal of what looks good. You don’t need half a dozen people chiming in with their opinions of each dress.
-
Wear shoes with the same size heel you will wear on the day. You should also choose your wedding bra at the beginning of the process and wear it under all the dresses you try on.
-
Start in plenty of time. You’ll almost certainly need to have some alterations made on the dress you choose and these all take time. Begin the search at least six months before your wedding date.
-
There’s no law saying you have to have a white dress. If white is just not your colour, experiment with other possibilities.
-
Don’t forget the practicalities. You’re going to spend all day in this dress so it has to be comfortable. You’re also going to have to be able to walk, turn, bend and maybe even dance the macarena. Don’t choose something that will make all this a torture!
