There are a number of important ways of getting the photographs that you want.

Choose carefully

Many people spend thousands on their dress, make-up, shoes but want to cut corners for their photography. What is the point in looking unforgettable, only to receive forgettable images that will disappoint you forever?

A photographer who will listen to what you want, is experienced at weddings, is imaginative and who makes the experience fun, is crucial to the quality of your wedding memories.

Get to know your photographer

Try to have an engagement session with your photographer to allow you to interact before your wedding day and enable the photographer to evaluate your best angles.

This will also allow you and the photographer to feel comfortable together. Think about the style of photography you want.

Is it completely candid and natural? Or is it actually posed, but looks natural and candid? Your photographer will get a better sense of your “style” and your willingness to do what it takes to achieve the vision you have planned. Investigate different effects such as soft focus.

Communicate

Many couples have been disappointed because their photographs are not what they expected. Perhaps they seemed to be all from a long distance, or perhaps none show the full length and detail of the dress. Communication is vital. Use correct terms when speaking to your photographer. Long shots are full length. Mid shots are from the waist up. Close-ups are head and shoulders. Extreme close up could be of just your hands as you put your rings on.

The angle of your photos is vital. Photos taken from a high angle looking down make the subject look more demure and softer. Photos taken looking up from a low angle make the subject look more powerful. Leaning towards the photographer can create warmth. These techniques can be used to great effect but also can be misused – talk to your photographer.

Make a scrapbook of photos you like and show it to your photographer to give him or her a clear idea of what you envisage.

Plan ahead

Give your photographer a list of not to be missed photos for the day. This list should be made up by you and your partner, with perhaps your parents’ input.

Props don’t just appear. Your photographer should spend some time with you before your wedding day discovering what personalised shots will reflect your personalities. If going to the beach, would a surfboard be good? Or a silver ice bucket and a rug to sit on the sand and sip champagne as the sun goes down? Do you want your groomsmen in sunnies? Want to have a photograph of you all walking along the beach eating an ice cream? Make sure the best man has some money in his pocket.

Backgrounds are vital. Have you seen wedding photos where the bride is sitting on a lounge and right behind her head is a distracting photo? A stylist attending with your photographer on the day ensures all these little details are perfect. They give posing advice and can make the whole experience feel effortless. Does your photographer employ one?

Do a trial run with your hair and make-up and take photos to make sure you’re happy with your appearance. Check your make-up both in natural light and indoors to be sure it’s not too heavy. It is vital that make-up looks light, clean and natural. Even though your wedding is a very special day, keep in mind that you still want to look like you.

Think about the end product

If you are computer savvy you may wish to create your own photo book. If so, you will need to look at photographic packages that allow you to keep the high-resolution images.

Perhaps you want images on canvas or in a magazine album? Or maybe a series of traditional prints? The more you have thought about what you will be doing with your images, the better you will be at picking a package to suit you.

A good idea is to have your photographer print cards with your image on it. Then when your friends and family want to view your wedding pictures, they can find the website and information for ordering.

Finally… have a great attitude

Relax, let go, and have fun. If, despite all your planning, there is a little hiccup on the day, embrace it and laugh! These little hiccups will be the thing that you will be talking about years later.
