slices of heaven
If you thought a wedding cake was, well, just a cake, then think again. Cakes are surrounded by folklore and custom, including the belief that if you sleep with a piece of cake under your pillow you will dream of your future husband or wife – that's why guests take away a piece.
Cutting the cake is also deeply symbolic as the first task the new couple will undertake together – so you'd better make sure you get it right! The only rule these days when it comes to choosing a cake is that there are practically no rules. Be guided by your own personal sense of style but also listen to your cake designer. The cake should fit in with the overall “look” of your wedding. There are practical considerations, too.
For instance, how big does the cake need to be? Make sure you allow for a reasonable portion for each of your guests as there is nothing more embarrassing than running out on the day. You also need to decide how the cake will be transported to the reception venue and who will set it up. Designers will often offer these services and it's well worth taking them up on it.
