Ask anyone about a wedding they have attended and the chances are, after they've told you how beautiful the bride looked, they'll have something to say about the food.

The food … the wine … the service … are all things that will stick in your guests 'mind slong after the last confetti has been swept up and you've returned from your honeymoon.

It may be that the venue you have your heart set on does its own catering, in which case you don't have a choice. However, if that is not the case, choosing a caterer is one of the most important decisions you will make.

Personal recommendation is obviously the best way to find a caterer you can work with but if that's not possible, you'll need to shop around.

Some of the questions you need to ask a prospective caterer are what packages they can offer, how flexible they are, exactly what is included in the price, whether you can sample the menu in advance, how many staff they will provide and exactly what will their staff do (for instance, will they cut the cake? Pour wine?)

Early in the process you will also have to consider the basic question about whether it will be a seated meal, buffet style or finger food. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages and will also have a big effecton your budget.

Above all, take your time before settling on a caterer. You need to find someone you completely trust to keep you and your guests happy and well fed because the last thing you want to do on the day is to worry about food.
